What is a Portal?

Portal is a site featuring a suite of commonly used services, serving as a starting point and frequent gateway to the Web (Web portal) or a niche topic (vertical portal).

Web portal services often include a search engine or directory, news, email, stock quotes, maps, forums, chat, shopping, and options for customization. These are only some of the most frequently offered services; large portals often include dozens or hundreds of bundled services.

What is then a LearnITy Portal?

LearnITy Portal is a rich browser based GUI (fully customizable) that provides a single point access to content, collaboration, Notice Board, Chat Rooms, NoteBook, Calendar and many other services. It empowers the users with the ability to search for and have access to digital information, applications and services specific to their function.

What are the requirements?

One can access LearnITy Portal from anywhere in the world with a browser and Internet access.

LearnITy Portal works with almost any browser, including Netscape 7.0, Mozilla 1.0 and Internet Explorer versions 5.0 and higher.

Components of Portal

Top of the Portal Contains, links to Calendar, NoteBook and Change Profile in the left hand side of the Portal Logo while it contains links to Email, Help and Sign Out on the right hand side. Welcome Message is displayed below it.

The window has a Search Button and an Advanced Search Link. The Search Button searches all the items throughout the page.

In the window above, the word "Computer" was searched, The Search Results shows that the word Computer is found in Notice Information and Discussion Forum. Clicking the Links will launch the respective objects.

Advanced Search searches details of the respective components

There are 4 major components of the portal window. They are :

  1. Learning Objects
  2. Discussion Forum
  3. Notice Board and
  4. Chat Groups
Learning Objects

The Learning Object Section is the content delivery part of the portal. The user can only access the courses that are registered to that particular user or to the group the user is in. There are two columns Unit Name and Bookmark. The Unit Name column shows the Learning Objects i.e. the courses registered to that particular user, who have logged in. Clicking the course link opens the Content Delivery Window. The other column is the Bookmark. It shows the last topic accessed. If it is not yet been accessed. It Shows "Not Accessed Yet!". Clicking on the Bookmark opens the Content Delivery Window showing the last topic accessed.

Discussion Forum

The Discussion Forum is the module of the portal where one can participate in a free discussion about the topic if the user or the group the user is in, is registered to that particular forum. He/she can post a question or even reply to an already existing one. Attachment support is provided which will facilitate the interactivity

If the user in not registered to any Forum, the message "No Forums Registered". Is display

The Discussion Forum Section contains three columns, Name of the Forum, Date Created and the Last Message Posted. Clicking the name of the Forum launches the Discussion Forum in a new window. The Date Created displays the Creation Date of the Forum. The Last Message Posted show the last message posted. It contains a string displaying the Topic, date of the post and the sender who posted it. This string appears in the form of a link clicking which opens the Forum displaying the message selected.

Notice Board

The Notice Board Section of the Portal helps to post notice. It is for the posted for view of all the users. The administrator can post Notice so as the users. No registration is needed to post or view the notices.

The Notice Board consists of two columns - Posted On and Description. Posted on column displays the Date of Notice Posted while Description displays the Notice Title. The title contains a link, which will open the notice details in a new window.

There are two buttons - Add New and next. Add New button opens a new window for the user to add Notice. Next Button shows the next set of 5 questions. Previous button appears after the next set is displayed. If there are less than 5 questions the next button does not appear.

Calendar

The extreme top part of the page contains an image of a calendar, clicking on which launches the Calendar in a new window. Calendar is used to entry jobs and reminders on the various dates. One can also see the various items posted by other users on the shared calendar.

NoteBook

On clicking NoteBook icon launches a new window. The window contains three combo boxes and a GO button. On selecting the left combo box, one can view his personal Notes and can even add New Notes with respect to the different topics and subtopics. On selecting the other two combo boxes and clicking GO, one can view the Notes shared by other users. There is also another option to launch the NoteBook from within the Content Delivery Window. The window will then open with the course selected.
